A Drug-Free Treatment for ADHD is Now Available at Summit Brain Health in San Jose
MeRT, or magnetic e-resonance therapy is a treatment modality used to treat ADHD. It is non-invasive and drug-free. MeRT uses a gentle magnetic field to balance the function of the brain. It’s guided by imaging based on each person’s specific brain patterns and is customized specifically for you or your child.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a neurological condition. It can affect children and carry on into adulthood if not treated. People who have ADHD experience problems concentrating and focusing. It can also include other symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsive behavior, and difficulty paying attention.
ADHD often results in learning difficulties, and below-average school or job performance. And it can even cause relationship problems and lower self-esteem. Depending on the severity, ADHD can greatly affect a person’s quality of life.
Summit Brain Health Can Help!
Summit Brain Health in San Jose, California uses MeRT to treat those experiencing ADHD. Our treatment is non-invasive, painless, and does not involve the use of pharmaceuticals.
Dr. Geraci and our team would love the opportunity to help you or your child. We offer a qEEG which will show the extent of brain oscillations associated with ADHD. After undergoing this simple test, Dr. Geraci will sit down with you and go over the results with you and discuss your treatment plan.
Our goal is to offer our patients a pleasant treatment experience in a warm and caring environment!
To anyone who might be interested in this treatment, please call for more information. My daughter was treated and the results have been life-changing. When one family member is struggling, it’s so difficult for the rest of the family to watch and not know how to help. This was like a miracle for her and all of us who have seen such dramatic changes. I only wish this had been available years ago. Thank goodness for new research and Dr. Geraci’s vision to help individuals and their families.” – Donna J.

Every person with ADHD will experience it differently since each person’s brain is as unique to them as their fingerprint. It can also vary in severity from person to person.
King’s College London: Neurobiology Animation
This short video from King’s College in London illustrates the scientific basis for ADHD. Based on research, the video shows the differences in brain function and structure between people with ADHD and compares it to those without this condition.
There are known genetic links associated with ADHD, and with advances in technology, it’s now possible to demonstrate clear differences in the development and structure of the brain in patients with ADHD compared to those who do not have the condition. To date, evidence to show the neurobiological basis of ADHD has not always been collated and portrayed in a friendly format. The animation allows people to ‘see’ what is happening in the brain to link this to what the patient experiences and helps to dispel the myths around ADHD.” – Dr. Mitul Mehta, Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Neuroimaging Sciences at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kind’s College, London.
Symptoms of ADHD Can Include:
- Short attention span and the inability to focus on tasks
- Learning difficulties
- Easily distracted
- Impulsive/disruptive behaviors
- Hyperactivity
- No follow-through with tasks
- Poor organizational skills
- Fidgety
- Talking too much
- Interrupting others
- Impatience
- Anxiety
- Feeling like an outsider
- Depression
- Low self-esteem
MeRT can also treat other conditions, so if you are your child is experiencing other mental health problems such as the ones listed above, treatment is all-encompassing to optimize all areas of the brain.
While we know that the central nervous system is dysregulated, the exact cause of ADHD is unknown. Genetics may play a part. There is research that also shows that there is a link between gut health and ADHD. The Mayo Clinic indicates that other risk factors can include:
- Relatives with ADHD and/or another mental health disorder
- Exposure to environmental toxins including heavy metals
- Maternal drug use, alcohol use, or smoking during pregnancy
- Premature birth
Conventional Treatment for ADHD
The most common way that physicians treat ADHD is with an array of medications. Some drugs can help balance the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, though there can be unwanted side effects. Medications are not a cure for ADHD; instead, they help to manage symptoms. Antidepressants are sometimes prescribed, however, these types of meds work slowly and do come with the risk of suicidal ideations in young people.
Other treatment modalities that can be helpful for those with ADHD are neurofeedback, psychotherapy, and behavioral therapy.
MeRT Treatment for ADHD
MeRT is a more precise and customized version of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Both TMS and MeRT use gentle magnetic pulses to neuromodulate the brain waves and neuron activity. Neuromodulation is defined as the process of stimulating nerves by modulating neural pathway behavior caused by the disease process.
Both involve using a magnetic field that passes through the scalp from an electromagnetic coil.
There are some key differences though between MeRT and standard TMS. MeRT is much more precise and is based on each individual brain pattern.
We use a quantitative EEG (qEEG) test to analyze each person’s function and activity. This test is simple and painless and involved placing a rubber cap on the head with electrodes to record the brain’s activity. Once this test is completed and analyzed, we are able to show you a “brain map” of your own brain waves.
We use this to guide the magnet with the correct frequency and amplitude specifically for you. Over time, our treatment will pull your brain wave dysregulations back into a normal pattern, and the symptoms are able to resolve themselves.
Standard TMS is more of a one-size fits all approach because there is no qEEG, and thus no guidance for each individual’s own brain patterns.
Patients have reported that they have experienced significant clinical improvements once the brain is returned to a state of homeostasis. *
Our treatment is painless and best of all, it is non-pharmaceutical. We are happy to communicate with your primary care provider/psychiatrist as well.
Treatment usually lasts for 6 weeks. Appointments are Monday through Friday and last about 30 minutes. There is no sedation involved, and you can drive safely after your appointment.
*Results can vary from person to person and are not guaranteed.
The Process from Start to Finish
qEEG
The first step is the qEEG. We allow 45 minutes to 1 hour for this appointment. We’ll place a cap on your head, attach the electrodes, and record your neural activity. Once we get the reading that we need, we review your results with our team of neuroscientists and physicians to obtain your specific treatment protocol.
Please note that the qEEG is repeated every 10 treatments. We want to monitor any changes that you are experiencing, both on the qEEG and clinical improvements that you are experiencing.
The Consultation
Approximately 48-72 hours after your qEEG is completed, you will have your appointment with Dr. Geraci. He will go over the findings with you and discuss treatment protocols as well as answer any questions.
Treatment Sessions
Treatment sessions last just 30 minutes. You will sit in a comfortable chair while your technician administers the treatment to your scalp area via a hand-held magnetic coil. The magnetic pulses are delivered every 6-8 seconds of every minute. You may feel some sensation while this is taking place, but it is not uncomfortable or painful.
As your brain gets used to the treatment process, you may experience a slight headache after treatment, but this is treatable with any OTC medication such as Tylenol or Advil. You may feel a slight increase in symptoms during the first week or two, however, this is your brain’s way of adapting to the treatment.
It is similar to starting an exercise program. If you are out of shape, your body may feel sore for a short time as you adjust to using your muscles again. With MeRT, after a week or two, these minor side effects should subside. You may start to notice clinical improvements within the first few weeks or so, but it may take longer for others. We recommend a full six weeks of treatment to ensure long-lasting benefits.
Insurance Coverage
While we are unable to file any of your treatment with your insurance, we can provide you with a Super Bill at the end of your treatment process to submit to your insurance company for any possible reimbursement, though this treatment is not usually covered by insurance.
Medicare and Medicaid do not provide any reimbursement, and we are unable to offer super bills to patients who have this insurance.
We do accept all credit cards including Mastercard, Visa, American Express, and Discover.
