A New, Non-invasive, Drug-Free Treatment for Autism!
MeRT technology uses FDA-cleared equipment to generate a gentle magnetic field to balance and stimulate brain function.
This treatment can result in improved learning ability, more calmness, and better communication.
The MeRT Approach: MeRT stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy. MeRT uses gentle magnetic waves to balance and stimulate brain function, guided by sophisticated diagnostics and imaging. And MeRT can be used in conjunction with any other type of therapy — in fact, this treatment can accelerate progress with existing therapies such as ABA.
Many parents are overwhelmed by a diagnosis of Autism, but early intervention is key to the child’s development. Results from this treatment are giving many parents renewed HOPE for their child!
We have treated many patients with Autism, and our technicians and clinicians hold these children, their well-being, and their families in the highest regard. We understand the heartbreak of parents who have likely already invested so much into trying to help their child with little progress. Many feel that their child has potential but just can’t seem to unlock it.
We are committed to walking this journey with you and your child and do so with the utmost compassion and care. Please note that we treat children who are three years and older.

Madison’s Story
Madison is a 21-year-old patient with Autism who we treated at Summit Brain Health. She wrote the following letter to Dr. Geraci throughout her treatment process: “Dr. Geraci, I’m very scared I won’t talk. I’m very kind and have important things to say. It’s important I talk so I can help others like me. I appreciate …. Dr. Geraci, thank you for changing my life. I’m happy, not depressed. It lifted in my brain. I’m so happy and I want to live to do things. I’m so grateful. You’re an angel and so kind. I also am talking!! Dr. Geraci, I’m more loving and able to cuddle my mom. She is so happy. Before I was uncomfortable – too hard to be close. It just happened… not sure how but I’m doing it.” – Madison, a 21-year-old patient with Autism
Madison’s mom added a note: “Madison opened the bathroom drawer, got out the brush and I came in. She was brushing her hair and had already put toothpaste on her toothbrush. She started brushing her teeth herself.” – Madison’s mom.
Dr. Thomas Geraci has now brought this state-of-the-art MeRT technology to Summit Brain Health in San Jose to provide treatment for those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
MeRT Treatment for Autism in San Jose
Receiving a diagnosis of autism can be overwhelming, but early intervention can be critical to your child’s development. Kids don’t usually grow out of autism, but they can improve function and quality of life.
MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, is a high-tech treatment that combines:
- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS, an FDA-cleared therapy),
- Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG), and
- Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG)
MeRT evolved from TMS, which was more of a generalized approach for the treatment of autism because it was only able to target a single location in the brain with one frequency. Conversely, MeRT is customized to each individual based on the results of their EEG and tailored to the patient’s needs as to frequency, location, and power used.
We had exhausted every available treatment hoping to help our daughter. Nothing worked—then we found Brain Treatment Center. MeRT changed everything for us.” – parent of a child with autism
I’m so happy and thrilled that my son gets TMS therapy at Summit Brain Health. Dr. Geraci and Tylor are excellent; they are professional, accommodating, gentle and sensitive when it comes down to treating patients with disabilities. This is a miracle for us that this clinic opened up. Aldo has had about 30 treatments and the results have been incredible. Many thanks to the Summit Brain Health team.” – Georgina C., mother of a child with autism

“We’ve seen some promising results in autism.”
“EEGs (electrical pictures of the brain) can tell us when there are abnormalities in neural networks. … And we run that data through a normative database, and we can see, for example, if somebody has an area in the left prefrontal cortex that’s cycling at two Hertz — which means that they may be only processing information two times per second — whereas the rest of their brain may be cycling 11 times per second. …
“[MeRT] was engineered to be a brain optimization technology where we’re trying to increase the coherence, [so] different areas of the brain can communicate with each other and improve the metabolic efficiency of the brain. With that in mind, we do see some improvements across a number of different dimensions. We’ve seen some improvements and some promising results in autism.” – Dr. Erik Won, President of Wave Neuroscience, from his appearance on the Broken Brain podcast
How MeRT Can Help Your Child Improve Their Independence, Social Skills, and Communication
The electrical signals in the brain of a child with autism are different than an average child and will show up on a qEEG (quantitative EEG). In an average child, the brain patterns are typically dominant alpha frequency. In an autistic brain, there is a mix of slower brain waves (delta and theta) and higher frequencies of beta waves.
MeRT treatment works by neuromodulating the brain waves, altering nerve activity in the brain to help it be more organized and in sync. This translates into a higher-functioning child with better communication and social skills. It also means a higher quality of life for both you and your child.

More from Madeleine
I cannot begin to describe the miracle that is MeRT therapy as well as the kindness and bedside manner of Dr. Geraci and his wonderful team. My 7-year old is on the spectrum and has struggled with speech and cognition. I have researched literally every treatment and remedy I came across to see how I can help my son. Luckily one day, a parent on my ASD support page recommended MeRT. I went into it with low expectations because I didn’t want to get disappointed in case it didn’t give us gains, but boy was I wrong.
5-weeks into our treatment and my son was not only more verbal than before, but his speech was functional, and was talking in long sentences. He was also very engaged instead of stimming uncontrollably and trapped in his own world. He also became very affectionate and started giving us hugs and kisses whereas before he would just stare blankly at us and would refuse physical contact. It has been incredibly encouraging for us. The gains that we got made the treatment worth it. Dr. Geraci is a gem. He is so wonderful and extremely patient with my sons. I cannot recommend him and MeRT enough and my wish is to reach as many ASD parents as possible so they can avail of this life-changing treatment for their children.” – Madeleine M.

Successful Treatment for Autism with MeRT featured in the Autism Parenting Magazine
In the third week, something happened. The family was driving around sight-seeing when they realized that they were getting lost in the California desert. Mary and Frank began to argue, and right in the midst of it, the moment they had waited six years for finally came. “I remember he said a seven-word sentence basically to the effect of ‘I want you two to stop fighting.’ And it shocked me so much that I almost stopped breathing,” Frank recounts. “I looked at my wife and said ‘Do you realize what just happened? He just said a seven-word sentence.’ I had tears in my eyes, and I was happy at the same time. He was so upset that it pushed these words through.”
From there, Frankie’s progress snowballed. They returned home after only a month, but the difference between the child who arrived in California and the one who left was striking. They had taken a video of Frankie on the plane when they started the journey, “and he’s just making baby babble,” Frank says. “We have another video of him on the plane coming back. And he looks out the window and says, ‘Goodbye California, see you soon.’ This was a nonverbal kid, 30 days later. And his feet are flat on the ground.”
Doctors said Frankie would continue to improve even without regular MeRTalbeit a bit slower. Today, he is 11 years old, verbal, and attends a public school. He tells Frank stories about times when he wanted to speak but couldn’t. “He goes ‘You know, I’m so glad we went to the brain treatment because now I can talk,’” says Frank.
Starting as a New Patient for Autism Treatment
Starting as a new patient at Summit Brain Health initially involves two appointments, both of which are about 45 minutes to an hour in length. Your first appointment is when your EEG testing takes place, and the second appointment is when you have your consultation with Dr. Geraci.
At the first appointment, we will collect your new patient paperwork, and our neurotechnician will complete your qEEG (quantitative Electroencephalogram) and EKG testing. This test is simple and painless; it involves placing a cap on your head to measure the electrical activity in your brain and map out any areas which are not performing as they should. A lead is also placed on your chest to capture the EKG data. We are happy to provide you with some additional tips to help keep your child calm while the qEEG takes place.
We perform this test right in our office, then send the data to our scientists and clinical teams. They, along with Dr. Geraci, carefully analyze the test results to identify any dysregulation occurring in the brain. Based on their analysis, we develop a treatment plan customized to your specific condition and schedule your assessment period of treatment.
After the qEEG
Your second appointment, after your qEEG/EKG, is a consultation with Dr. Geraci. He will be able to answer any questions that you may have and let you know more about what to expect during your treatment. He will also go over your medical history, along with symptoms.
Treatment begins on a Monday and ends on a Friday each week. We repeat the qEEG after every 10 treatments. We also monitor clinical progress. Appointments are 30-40 minutes long. We closely monitor any clinical changes being realized by the patient, and the qEEG/EKG confirms what changes are occurring in the brain. The treatment sessions generally last 30-45 minutes each day.
If you are a patient who will be traveling from out of town, we aim to schedule your qEEG/EKG on a Friday, then schedule your consultation and first treatment session for the following Monday.
The full duration of treatment usually lasts for 6 weeks.
For patients who prefer to have their first and second appointments before deciding to move forward with treatment, we are happy to work with you on this.
Insurance
We do not accept insurance at our clinic, nor do we file it on your behalf. We are happy to provide you with the appropriate paperwork at the end of your treatment period so that you can submit it to your insurance company to see if they will provide any reimbursement. Please note, however, that neither Medicare nor Medicaid offer any reimbursement coverage for MeRT treatment.

Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder affects how a person perceives the outside world and interacts with others. This can cause issues with social interactions, communication skills, learning, and the ability to function independently.
Autism can also cause a person to misbehave in response to typical everyday situations. Symptoms and their severity can vary; the severity of symptoms determines where a person is on the “spectrum.” Asperger’s Syndrome also falls under Autism Spectrum Disorder and usually refers to the mild end of the spectrum.
Most children will show symptoms in the first year of life. Others, however, may develop normally and then regress between 18 and 24 months of age, causing them to lose skills they’ve already learned and take on other characteristics of Autism.
Every child with Autism will display unique behavior patterns and severity levels, from high-functioning to low-functioning. Intelligence levels can vary from low to high.
However, even if they have high levels of intelligence and learn quickly, they still may lack common sense, adequate social skills, the ability to communicate well, and not be able to cope with everyday life situations with appropriate responses.
Common Autism Signs and Symptoms
- Doesn’t appear to understand or hear when being spoken to
- Seems to be disconnected from the outside world and loved ones or caregivers
- Has no verbal skills
- Inability to read body language or infer changes in tone of voice
- Doesn’t make eye contact
- Has a blank facial expression
- Appears to lack emotions and compassion
- Uses monotone or robotic speech patterns
- Can’t understand simple questions or instructions
- Responds inappropriately in social settings
- Disruptive, loud, or hyper-reactive
- Obsessive about routines
- Has an abnormal fixation on objects
- Moves stiffly
- Rocks back and forth or performs other repetitive movements
- Exhibits self-harming behaviors such as hitting themselves, biting, or head banging
- Heightened sensitivity to light and sound
- High intelligence levels, but the inability to make human connections or feel empathy toward others
When children are on the mild end of the spectrum, they have a better chance of becoming more engaged in relationships with others and have fewer behavioral disturbances. Others that are on the moderate to severe end of the spectrum will have problems with communication and social skills. The teenage years can bring increased issues stemming from behavior and hormonal changes during this time. However, according to patients (or their parents), MeRT has been life-changing.*
