Do you or someone you know suffer from any of the following symptoms or conditions?
- Major Depressive Disorder/Drug-Resistant Depression
- Traumatic Brain Injury and/or Post-Concussive Syndrome
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Major Burn Out
- Chronic Sleep Problems
- ADHD and Other Learning Disorders
- After-Effects of Stroke
- Parkinson’s Disease
These types of conditions and symptoms can severely impact the quality of life for both you and your loved ones. In many cases, patients who are suffering are prescribed medications that either don’t work or have unpleasant side effects. There are other therapies that can help and should be explored when applicable. However, studies also show that brain waves are altered in patients who are suffering from various types of brain dysregulation to include Depression, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)/Concussion, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Autism, and more. The studies show that brain oscillations are altered compared to a brain that is free of these types of dysregulation.
MeRT CAN HELP
Dr. Thomas Geraci has brought this emerging technology to San Carlos and the bay area. MeRT, which stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, is a treatment process that is guided by sophisticated qEEG imaging and is uses a magnetic coil to modulate and balance dysregulation occurring in the brain.
A gentle magnetic field is used to stimulate brain function in areas that are not functioning as they should. The technology uses a qEEG (quantitative electroencephalograph) to map dysregulation so that the treatment protocol for every patient can be customized to their individual condition. MeRT can improve the synchronization and communication in the brain which can lead to long-lasting improvement.
It is a non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical treatment for many mental health conditions along with other types of brain dysregulation. The equipment used in the MeRT process is FDA-cleared to treat Depression and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and is currently being used “off-label” to treat other conditions.

Altered Brain Waves
Studies have shown that patients who suffer from such conditions as Depression, Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion, PTSD, Autism, and others, have been shown to have altered brain oscillations compared to people who do not have these types of brain dysregulations.
Much of the initial research for MeRT was done on veterans returning from combat by the United States Department of Defense. Defense One published an article that explains how this treatment benefited those who returned from war and were suffering from moderate to severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Depressive Disorder, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Additional studies have been completed in the private sector on these conditions along with Autism. Texas A&M University is currently doing additional studies on how MeRT benefits those with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion with the goal of obtaining FDA clearance for treatment of these conditions.

MeRT Featured on Dr. Mark Hyman’s “Broken Brain” Podcast
The famous podcast, “The Broken Brain,” promoted by Dr. Mark Hyman, featured utilizing MeRT for treatment of PTSD, Concussions, and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). If you or someone you know has experienced any of these conditions it is certainly worth listening to this.
Dr. Erik Won, from our Brain Treatment Center in California, speaks about the utilization of this technology to treat members of the military who have had traumatic brain injuries, concussions, or who have experienced PTSD as a result of their experiences, with many incredible successes.
With other repercussions that can occur, for both military and veterans, this is incredibly important. For example, suicide is at twice the rate for veterans, with approximately 17 veteran deaths per day. In a high-stress environment, such as serving in the military, the transition afterward can be complicated and there are often underlying reasons for conditions that may occur. MeRT may help to address these issues.
Major Depressive Disorder
Depression can vary in severity from individual to individual and can be debilitating to some causing their quality of life to be greatly affected. Depression is usually treated with medication and in some cases, counseling as well. However, medication isn’t always tolerated well and while it can help with symptoms, it doesn’t cure the disease.
Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States and is on the rise. Getting the right kind of help can be the difference between life and death. MeRT is a non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical form of neuromodulation for Depression and Anxiety. Many patients have been able to get their lives back again and go off of their medication permanently.
Of all my injuries by far the worst were the ones you could not see. I had degraded to the point of not being able to leave my home because of panic attacks and severe anxiety. The feeling was overwhelming, and no mediation could numb it. I told my doctor at one point I couldn’t kill myself because I have a family with young children that I am responsible for. I was living in despair and physical pain every day without reprieve, that is until I was able to get treatment.”
Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion
For those who have experienced a mild concussion, a full recovery is often possible just by allowing some time to pass in order to heal. But others can experience symptoms for months or even years. In some cases, a person may have an injury to the brain and not even be aware of it at the time, but can later develop symptoms.
For those who suffer moderate injuries, or those who suffer multiple concussions, their lives can be drastically changed. Not everyone who experiences mild to moderate traumatic brain injuries has a loss of consciousness. Severe injuries to the head can result in coma and death.
TBI patients may need rehab for speech or other senses that are impacted, memory, coordination, and motor skills. It’s not uncommon for patients who’ve experienced a head injury to undergo personality changes that can affect their relationships, the ability to handle stress and control emotions or to complete simple day-to-day activities.
MeRT treatment can help improve symptoms associated with Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Concussive Syndrome and has assisted many in getting their lives back with significant improvements in symptoms.
I’m two or three months past my last treatment, and I can honestly say my brain is in a better place than it was before. The emotional highs and lows I was living with have stabilized. My cognition took off during that period, and it hasn’t slowed down since.” – Nick Hardwick, Retired NFL Center, Chargers
PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder can occur if a person has witnessed or experienced first-hand, terrifying life events. This syndrome can also be triggered after going through extended periods of extreme stress.
Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress can get worse over time. They can also be delayed, such as in situations such as past child abuse. It’s also possible to undergo traumatic events and have them later triggered by something else.
The National Institute of Health published a study that showed during the past year, up to 3.6% of all adults experienced some form of PTSD, which can be life-changing. Symptoms can be terrifying as the patient relives the event or has nightmares about it. The ability to function normally can be seriously impaired and the quality of life for the victim and their loved ones can degrade significantly.
As I write this, I just completed my sixth week of treatment. A conservative estimate is that I have had a 60 – 70% reduction of the symptoms I listed above and have a whole new lease on life. I can focus and feel good about myself. Finally, I feel confident and can laugh again. Most importantly, I can feel the love for and from my family again.” – Veteran, after undergoing MeRT therapy
Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD, affects everyone differently depending on where they fall on the Spectrum, what therapies they’ve been through, and many other variables. Regardless of whether they are high or low functioning, they can still seem to lack common sense, not be able to communicate normally, have trouble coping with everyday life events, or not be able to appropriately respond.
Autism affects how a child interprets the outside world. Some kids experience severe stress when presented with unfamiliar stimuli and are unable to appropriately express themselves in response. Social interactions can be very stressful for the child and their family.
Our Story – Testimony of a Mother of a Child with Autism.
“We have a beautiful daughter, Raquel and she was diagnosed with severe autism at the young age of 1 ½ years. Rachel did not follow directions, she did not look into my eyes, she did not want to be touched, she did not speak, she did not listen or respond to her name, she did not distinguish me as her mother, and I could clearly feel she was very anxious all the time.
Desperate, and with the intention of doing my best to guarantee a better quality of life for my daughter, for 4 years I investigated and took all available routes to try to help her overcome her condition. I took her to different types of therapy (phonoaudiology, occupational, behavioral, and sensory integration), in addition to a diet regime free of casein and gluten. All these efforts were important and helped my daughter have small signs of improvement, but Raquel was far from making any significant progress – doctors still gave her the same severe diagnosis.
It was not until the fourth year of this endless quest that we finally came up with something that would change our lives, and the life of our daughter forever. When it seemed that all alternatives were exhausted, Dr. Jeff Bradstreet told me about a new therapy in Newport Beach, California, called MeRT, which consisted of repetitive brain stimulation through magnetic waves. There was already strong empirical evidence that they help to regulate brain functioning quickly, safely, effectively and permanently.
Learning About MeRT
Dr. Bradstreet explained that there were 20% of people who, for some unknown reason, did not respond to treatment, but an 80% chance of improvement was definitely an opportunity that I was not willing to let go, especially if it had to do with the well-being of my girl.
I traveled to California and they explained what the treatment consisted of. Rachel was going to do an EEG (Electroencephalogram) to determine exactly what was happening in her brain so that they could design a treatment tailored to her needs.
The study confirmed that the front of her brain did not work properly so Rachel did not process the information like the other children. With the clearest panorama, and high optimism, I agreed to start treatment immediately. I could not wait to start.
On the first day of therapy I thought my daughter wouldn’t cooperate. To my surprise she seemed to enjoy the procedure. Obviously at the end of the day I saw no changes in her behavior, but I did not expect to see results so fast. The story takes a really unexpected turn for all of us at the end of the second day of therapy.
A New Hope
We went back to the house of some relatives, where we were spending the night, and Raquel approached me, with a glass between her little hands asking me to give her some “Juz”. There are no words that can express the emotions that I felt at that moment. All the people who know me ask me if I shed tears of joy in that moment. It was the first time I could say that I had heard the voice of my 4 year old daughter. Incredibly this was not all.
A few minutes later my daughter went out to the garden of the house, approached a lemon tree, took one and brought it to her face to smell it. For a little girl who practically lived in the corner of the room, interacting with her shadow, this was a revelation, to the point that a few moments later, when her sister took the lemon from her hands, Raquel demanded loudly “My, Lemon?” Only two days of therapy had passed and we suddenly had what seemed, for the first time in her short life, a normal child.
At the end of the second week of treatment, we arrived at the Clinic excited and very eager to share with the medical staff the great advances that we had seen after the second therapy. The Director of Center approached me and asked me to accompany him to the game room where Raquel was. I will never forget that moment. He said, “Look at your daughter.” Raquel was there, sitting by a window. She was pointing to the passing cars and asking out loud: “Blue Car?”, “Green Car?”, also an airplane “Blue Plane with White?”
Our Life Changed
Most incredible of all was that not only had she improved her ability to communicate, but her emotional projection also took a 180-degree turn. My daughter now asked me to pick her up and carry her in my arms. She hugged me for the first time voluntarily and repeatedly for more than 15 minutes. Aside from improving in language, she also improved her emotional connection. They were the most beautiful 15 minutes of my life. My daughter recognized me and expressed it openly and freely for the first time.
Since that day she did not let me go, everything she wanted to do, was with me. When I realized these great changes I began to carry out other activities with my daughter. What I can not forget to mention is that Raquel’s anxiety did not allow us to take her anywhere. When we went to a mall, the screams were so loud that a man even asked if she needed an ambulance. To take her to the U.S. was horrible too, because customs officers could not understand how this girl could not calm down with her mother. After 3 weeks of therapy Raquel even tolerated going to Disney.
So Much Joy
That frightful part of our lives was over. Now I was free to walk with my daughter and she was for the first time able to enjoy the rides. I meditated about why God sent this miracle to me. I came to the conclusion that if Raquel did so well, it had to be for something greater than us. At the end of the Treatment and seeing the progress, I decided to meet with the key people of the company and asked them to send a MeRT machine to Panama.
When I got to the office I sat down with them and explained that I would not be able to live without the machine that brought me so many miracles. It took a year, but we finally managed to open the doors of Brain Treatment Center in Panama, and provide thousands of people with a treatment that could be the change they sought in their lives, closer, more accessible and comfortable. – Raquel’s Mother *
Living in a high-stress world has become the norm. No matter what your occupation or situation is, chronic stress, health issues, and aging can all take a toll on your mind and body. Even if you are an overall healthy individual, daily life and all of its demands can burn you out. Additionally, as you age, you may not be as sharp mentally or feel as good physically as you used to, which can affect aspects of your health that can include:
- Burn out
- Lack of energy
- Decreased motivation
- Generalized anxiety
- Poor concentration
- Chronic fatigue
- Reduced ability to handle stress
- Brain fog
- Slow memory recall
- Feeling like you’ve lost your competitive edge
- Feeling dull or numb
I underwent neural restorative therapy for two months with total symptom resolution. After, I can function again at work, and can spend much needed time with my family. I have my sense of well-being back and a clarity of thought I haven’t had in many years.”
Symptoms of dementia can vary from person to person, and symptoms can also worsen over time. While dementia isn’t a disease in and of itself, it is a set of symptoms with various underlying causes. Regardless of the cause, it affects thinking, memory, perceptions, independence and can grossly disrupt daily life. As dementia worsens, full-time care if often required.
Memory loss is the most common symptom of dementia. The most common cause of dementia that progresses over time is Alzheimer’s Disease. While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, there are therapies that can slow its progression.
It is important to be under the care of a physician to help determine the underlying medical issue that is causing dementia symptoms. Some conditions can be reversible such as those caused by infections, autoimmune conditions, malabsorption of some nutrients, adverse reactions to medications, and more.
Progressive dementia can be caused by Alzheimer’s Disease, Vascular issues, Lewy Body Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, etc.
MeRT may help with some forms of dementia. It’s important to receive clearance from your physician before undergoing this therapy, and follow-up sessions may be required to maintain results.
MeRT Treatment Can Also Help With Other Conditions:
This includes conditions such as:
- Learning Disorders
- After-Effects of Stroke
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Sleep Disorders
How MeRT Works
MeRT is a type of therapy that is guided by very sophisticated imaging and neuromodulates the brain with the use of a magnetic coil.
The first part of the MeRT process involves the patient undergoing a quantitative EEG to identify and map any dysregulation in the brain. This test shows the patient’s specific and unique brainwave function and pattern. This detailed analysis is reviewed by Dr. Geraci and a team of neuroscientists to come up with the exact neural synchronization protocol to be used with the goal of improved communication within the brain which can lead to significant clinical improvements. *
What is the Difference Between TMS and MeRT?
TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) modulates the activity in the brain by using magnetic fields which pass through the scalp from a magnetic coil. TMS in itself is more of a one-size-fits-all approach because the technology targets a single location in the brain with a single frequency regardless of what condition the patient has.
MeRT utilizes this technology, however, treatment is customized based on each patient’s neural dysregulation which is identified by the qEEG results. This allows Dr. Geraci to individualize frequency, location, and power for each unique person.
Starting as a New Patient
Starting as a new patient at Summit Brain Health initially involves two appointments, both of which are about 45-minutes to an hour in length. Your first appointment is when your testing takes place and the second appointment is when you have your consultation with Dr. Geraci.
At the first appointment, we will collect your new patient paperwork and our neurotechnician will complete your qEEG (quantitative Electroencephalogram) and EKG testing. This is a simple and painless test that involves placing a cap on your head to measure the electrical activity in your brain and map out any areas which are not performing as they should. A lead is also placed on your chest to capture the EKG data.
This test is performed right in our office and the data is sent to our scientists and clinical teams, who, along with Dr. Geraci, carefully analyze the test results in order to identify any dysregulation occurring in the brain and come up with a treatment plan that is customized to your specific condition and your assessment period of treatment will be scheduled.
Your second appointment after your qEEG/EKG is a consultation with Dr. Geraci. He will be able to answer any questions that you may have and let you know more about what to expect during your assessment period of treatment. He will also go over your medical history along with your symptoms.
The assessment period of treatment is 2-weeks in duration and also begins on a Monday. Treatment for the first week occurs Monday through Friday, and for the second week occurs Monday through Thursday, with the repeat qEEG/EKG being completed on Friday to measure progress.
During the assessment period, we closely monitor any clinical changes being realized by the patient, and the qEEG/EKG confirms what changes are occurring in the brain. The treatment sessions generally last 30-45 minutes each day.
If you are a patient who will be traveling from out of town, we aim to schedule your qEEG/EKG on a Friday and then schedule your consultation and your first treatment session to begin on the following Monday.
For patients who prefer to have the first and second appointments before deciding to move forward with treatment, we are happy to work with you on this.
After the appropriate assessment period is completed and you are noting improvements in brain function, we will schedule additional MeRT treatment in 2-week intervals with qEEG/EKG and a consultation with Dr. Geraci every 2-weeks in order to monitor your progress and confirm that changes are still showing on the testing. Most conditions treated with MeRT provide noticeable and long-lasting results after 4-8 weeks of treatment however, each patient is different and results may vary.
We do not accept insurance at our clinic, nor do we file it on your behalf. We are happy to provide you with the appropriate paperwork at the end of your treatment period so that you can submit it to your insurance company to see if they will provide any reimbursement, however, please note that Medicare nor Medicaid provide any reimbursement coverage for MeRT treatment.
Currently, the equipment used with the MeRT process has been FDA-cleared for the treatment of Depression and OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder). Treatment for all other conditions is currently considered “off label.” Final testing and studies are currently being completed by Texas A&M University for FDA clearance for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion, however, clearance is likely an additional 2-years away.
For non-FDA cleared treatment, it is unlikely that your insurance company will provide you with any reimbursement for MeRT.
