Signs of Memory Loss can be Cause for Great Concern.
Your Memory is a Vital Part of who you are and Being Able to Function Well.
Do you or a loved one suffer from Dementia? Or are you seeing the beginning signs of Memory Loss?
MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) may be able to help patients with progressive forms of dementia and/or cognitive decline from progressing further. It can be heartbreaking to lose your memories, independence, and sense of self. Dementia symptoms can take their toll on both you and your loved ones. It is common for patients experiencing dementia to also become depressed. Dr. Geraci at Summit Brain Health is here to help.
There are a variety of diseases that can cause symptoms of dementia. Memory loss is one of the most common, however just because someone has loss of memory, does not necessarily mean that it’s a progressive form of dementia.
It is important to see a physician to determine the underlying cause of dementia since some cases can be caused by underlying medical issues that may be reversible. These can include some of the following disorders:
- Infections
- Autoimmune conditions
- Thyroid problems, low blood sugar, absorption issues with B vitamins
- Dehydration
- Adverse reactions to medications
- Anoxia, is a condition where organs may not be getting enough oxygen because of sleep apnea and other conditions.
Unfortunately, the most common cause of progressive dementia is Alzheimer’s Disease. Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s but there are drug therapies that can be used to slow its progression and MeRT treatment may be able to do so as well.
Other progressive diseases which can cause dementia include vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, mixed dementia, and Lewy Body dementia. Every person’s brain is as unique as their fingerprint, and everyone can react differently to disease processes. For patients experiencing dementia, we can first complete a qEEG, and then schedule a consultation with Dr. Geraci to discuss if MeRT is right for you or your loved one.

Dr. Geraci has brought this emerging, state-of-the-art technology called MeRT to San Jose and surrounding areas. MeRT, which stands for Magnetic e (EEG/EKG) Resonance Therapy is a non-invasive and non-pharmacological treatment that is used to address dysregulation in the brain by neuromodulating the electrical signals, thereby stimulating and reorganizing brain function.
The equipment used in the MeRT technology has been FDA-cleared for depression, and OCD (Obsessive-compulsive disorder). MeRT has been shown to help some patients who are suffering from dementia.
Some of the common benefits of MeRT treatment include:
- Improved sleep (this is usually one of the first benefits realized)
- Increased relaxation
- Better focus and concentration/attention span
- Improved motivation
- Better mood
- Increased ability to cope with stress
- Increased attention span
- Improved clarity of thinking
- Able to complete projects and tasks faster
- Fewer distractions
- Better decision-making ability
- Improved emotional stability
- More energy
- Greater sociability
- Elevated sports performance for athletes
- Fewer cravings for alcohol or drugs
- Improved self-esteem and self-confidence
Whatever the cause of dementia, MeRT may be able to help patients with dementia. Because progressive types of dementia can get worse over time, it is recommended that once the initial treatment is complete, the patient returns for intermittent treatment. This will vary by patient and their condition. MeRT can also help the patient with associated depression, which in turn gives them more motivation and better quality of life.

Because every person’s brain is as unique as their fingerprint, the way that their brain functions can be quite different than someone else. This process is highly individualized based on the qEEG findings and uses a targeted approach that hones in on the areas of the brain that are not functioning or communicating the way that they should. The individual results from your testing allow us to use this data to develop a targeted and customized approach in order to restore healthy brain function. The treatment, using specialized equipment, uses a magnet to gently stimulate distinct areas of the brain which can lead to improved communication and functionality and brain optimization.
Starting as a New Patient
Starting as a new patient at Summit Brain Health initially involves two appointments, both of which are about 45 minutes to an hour in length. Your first appointment is when your testing takes place, and the second appointment is when you have your consultation with Dr. Geraci.
Testing
At the first appointment, we will collect your new patient paperwork, and our neurotechnician will complete your qEEG and EKG testing. During this test, we place a cap on your head to measure the electrical activity in your brain and map out any areas not performing as they should. We also place a lead on your chest to capture the EKG data.
This testing is simple and painless, and we perform it right here in our office, then send the data to our scientists and clinical teams. They, along with Dr. Geraci, carefully analyze the test results to identify any dysregulation occurring in the brain. Based on their analysis, we develop a treatment plan customized to your specific condition and schedule your assessment period of treatment.
Consultation and Assessment
Your second appointment, after your qEEG/EKG, is a consultation with Dr. Geraci. He will be able to answer any questions that you may have and let you know more about what to expect during your treatment. He will also go over your medical history, along with symptoms.
Treatment starts on a Monday and ends on a Friday for each week of the duration. We will repeat the qEEG after every 10 treatments.
We closely monitor any clinical changes you may be realizing, and the qEEG/EKG confirms what changes are occurring in the brain. The treatment sessions generally last 30 to 45 minutes each day.
If you are a patient who will be traveling from out of town, we aim to schedule your qEEG/EKG on a Friday, then schedule your consultation and first treatment session for the following Monday.
For patients who prefer to have their first and second appointments before deciding to move forward with treatment, we are happy to work with you on this.
Most conditions treated with MeRT provide noticeable and long-lasting results after six weeks of treatment. However, each patient is different, and results may vary.
Generally speaking, patients wanting assistance with dementia symptoms will begin to show improvement after four to six weeks of treatment.
Insurance
We do not accept insurance at our clinic, nor do we file it on your behalf. We are happy to provide you with the appropriate paperwork at the end of your treatment period so that you can submit it to your insurance company to see if they will provide any reimbursement. Please note, however, that neither Medicare nor Medicaid offers any reimbursement coverage for MeRT treatment.
