A New, Alternative Treatment for Parkinson’s Disease in the San Jose Area
MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) may improve symptoms and delay disease progression.
You may know about Parkinson’s disease because someone you love has it — or you’ve watched others fight the disease while raising awareness (think Michael J. Fox or Muhammad Ali).
Or perhaps you’re dealing with Parkinson’s yourself. In that case, you are acutely aware of what this disease entails. However, you may not be aware of the most advanced treatments.
As medical science evolves, so do treatments for Parkinson’s disease. And while the disease is progressive and has no cure, treatments that improve symptoms can also improve quality of life. These treatments may include medicines, physical therapy, and even surgery.
Dr. Thomas Geraci and the team here at Summit Brain Health offer a new treatment for Parkinson’s: MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy. MeRT may improve Parkinson’s symptoms and also delay the progression of the disease.*
Simply stated, MeRT uses a magnetic field to stimulate and balance brain function, guided by sophisticated imaging and diagnostics. And that can mean a fuller, more satisfying life for those with Parkinson’s disease.

The Brain, Parkinson’s Disease, and MeRT Treatment
In patients with Parkinson’s disease, the most notable signs and symptoms occur when nerve cells in the basal ganglia (an area of the brain that controls movement) become impaired or die. These neurons normally produce an important brain chemical, dopamine, also called the “feel good” chemical. And lowered dopamine causes movement problems associated with Parkinson’s.
MeRT treatment is non-invasive and drug-free and focuses on improving the connectivity of neurons in the brain. And each person’s brain is unique to them, just like their fingerprints. Our revolutionary process uses brainwave analysis to isolate areas of the brain that are not functioning or communicating as they should. Then, we develop a unique and targeted approach for each person’s specific condition. The treatment, using specialized equipment, uses a magnet to gently stimulate distinct areas of the brain, which can lead to improved communication and functionality.

Parkinson’s Symptoms
Per the National Institute on Aging, Parkinson’s disease “causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination. Symptoms usually begin gradually and worsen over time. As the disease progresses, people may have difficulty walking and talking. They may also have mental and behavioral changes, sleep problems, depression, memory difficulties, and fatigue.”
Following are some symptoms of Parkinson’s:
- Tremors in hands, arms, legs, jaw, or head
- Muscle stiffness, where muscle remains contracted for a long time
- Slowness of movement
- Impaired balance and coordination, sometimes leading to falls.
- Sleep disorders such as insomnia or sleeping during the day.
- Depression, anxiety, or other emotional changes.
- Difficulty swallowing, chewing, or speaking, as well as problems smiling or blinking.
- Urinary problems or constipation.
- Skin problems.
By some estimates, half of Parkinson’s disease patients suffer from clinical depression. Antidepressant medications are often used to treat this depression, however, MeRT has been extremely successful in treating depression.* And MeRT is drug-free, non-invasive, and gentle.

Starting as a New Patient for Parkinson’s Treatment
Starting as a new patient at Summit Brain Health initially involves two appointments, both of which are about 45 minutes to an hour. At the first appointment, we will collect your new patient paperwork, and our neurotechnician will complete your qEEG and EKG testing. During this test, we place a cap on your head to measure the electrical activity in your brain to map out any areas not performing as they should. We also place a lead on your chest to capture the EKG data.
This testing is simple and painless, and we perform it right here in our office, then send the data to our scientists and clinical teams. They, along with Dr. Geraci, carefully analyze the test results to identify any dysregulation occurring in the brain. Based on their analysis, we develop a treatment plan customized to your specific condition and schedule your assessment period of treatment.
Consultation and Treatment
Your second appointment, after your qEEG/EKG, is a consultation with Dr. Geraci. He will be able to answer any questions that you may have and let you know more about what to expect during your treatment. He will also go over your medical history, along with symptoms.
Treatment begins on a Monday and ends on a Friday each week. We repeat the qEEG after every 10 treatments. We also monitor clinical progress. Appointments are 30-40 minutes long. We closely monitor any clinical changes being realized by the patient, and the qEEG/EKG confirms what changes are occurring in the brain. The treatment sessions generally last 30-45 minutes each day.
If you are a patient who will be traveling from out of town, we aim to schedule your qEEG/EKG on a Friday, then schedule your consultation and first treatment session for the following Monday.
The full duration of treatment usually lasts for 6 weeks.
For patients who prefer to have their first and second appointments before deciding to move forward with treatment, we are happy to work with you on this.
Most conditions treated with MeRT provide noticeable results after four to eight weeks of treatment. However, each patient is different, and results may vary. Because Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder, intermittent follow-up treatments may be warranted.

Insurance
We do not accept insurance at our clinic, nor do we file it on your behalf. We are happy to provide you with the appropriate paperwork at the end of your treatment period so that you can submit it to your insurance company to see if they will provide any reimbursement. Please note, however, that neither Medicare nor Medicaid offer any reimbursement coverage for MeRT treatment.
