The Brain, Neuroplasticity, and MeRT Treatment
When a stroke happens, it will damage some brain cells and kill others. Then, in the days and weeks after the stroke, the brain works to repair the injured brain cells and remove the dead ones. Following this, the brain works to restructure the damaged area by changing the connections in the brain.
This process, known as neuroplasticity, is the reason MeRT treatment works so well for stroke recovery. While MeRT can’t repair areas where brain cells have died, it can help the brain create new pathways around the injured area.
Non-invasive and drug-free, MeRT uses brainwave analysis to isolate areas that are not functioning or communicating as they should. Then, we develop a unique and targeted approach for each person’s specific condition.
The treatment, using specialized equipment, uses a magnet to stimulate distinct areas of the brain. This can lead to improved communication and functionality.

Types of Stroke and How They Affect the Body
Many types of stroke exist, each with its own after-effects.
An Ischemic Stroke is the most frequent form of stroke, which affects 87% of patients. It happens when a clot blocks a blood vessel, causing a lack of oxygen to the affected area of the brain.
Often called a mini-stroke, a TIA (Transient Ischemic Stroke) occurs when a temporary clot interrupts the blood flow to the brain. Although a TIA doesn’t result in permanent damage, it serves as a warning sign for a potential future stroke, which can be significantly more severe and detrimental.
A Hemorrhagic Stroke is commonly known as a “brain bleed.” It happens when blood vessels in the brain rupture and release blood into the surrounding tissues. The most prevalent form of hemorrhagic stroke is an aneurysm, which occurs when a blood vessel bursts. Uncontrolled high blood pressure is a common cause of aneurysms.
Besides these three types of stroke, two more are worth noting. A Cryptogenic Stroke refers to a stroke where the cause is unknown, while a Brain Stem Stroke specifically occurs in the brain stem rather than in the main part of the brain. Both types of strokes can cause significant damage and, in some cases, be fatal.
The impact of a stroke on the body varies based on its location in the brain. When a stroke happens on the left side of the brain, it affects the right side of the body and vice versa. The extent of damage caused by the stroke determines the necessary rehabilitation and the level of permanent disability that may occur.
Stroke after-effects can include:
- Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body
- Speaking, reading, or writing difficulties
- Memory problems and other cognitive impairment
- Numbness or tingling in body parts
- Changes in touch, temperature, or pain perception
- Fatigue and loss of energy
- Mood swings, depression, and anxiety
- Visual impairment
- Swallowing difficulties
A stroke can have wide-ranging effects, including potential permanent damage. The duration of recovery can vary significantly, ranging from weeks to years, depending on the severity of the stroke. Fortunately, therapy and rehabilitation play a crucial role in aiding recovery from the effects of a stroke.

Starting as a New Patient for Stroke Recovery Treatment
Starting as a new patient at Summit Brain Health initially involves two appointments, both of which are about 45 minutes to an hour.
At the first appointment, we will collect your new patient paperwork, and our neurotechnician will complete your qEEG and EKG testing. During this test, we place a cap on your head to measure the electrical activity in your brain to map out any areas not performing as they should. We also place a lead on your chest to capture the EKG data.
This testing is simple and painless, and we perform it right here in our office, then send the data to our scientists and clinical teams. They, along with Dr. Geraci, carefully analyze the test results to identify any dysregulation occurring in the brain. Based on their analysis, we develop a treatment plan customized to your specific condition and schedule your assessment period of treatment.
Consultation and Treatment
Your second appointment, after your qEEG/EKG, is a consultation with Dr. Geraci. He will be able to answer any questions that you may have and let you know more about what to expect during your treatment. He will also go over your medical history, along with symptoms.
Treatment begins on a Monday and ends on a Friday each week. We repeat the qEEG after every 10 treatments. We also monitor clinical progress. Appointments are 30-40 minutes long. We closely monitor any clinical changes being realized by the patient, and the qEEG/EKG confirms what changes are occurring in the brain. The treatment sessions generally last 30-45 minutes each day.
If you are a patient who will be traveling from out of town, we aim to schedule your qEEG/EKG on a Friday, then schedule your consultation and first treatment session for the following Monday.
The full duration of treatment usually lasts for 6 weeks.
For patients who prefer to have their first and second appointments before deciding to move forward with treatment, we are happy to work with you on this.
Most conditions treated with MeRT provide noticeable results after four to eight weeks of treatment. However, each patient is different, and results may vary. Because Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder, intermittent follow-up treatments may be warranted.

Insurance
We do not accept insurance at our clinic, nor do we file it on your behalf. We are happy to provide you with the appropriate paperwork at the end of your treatment period so that you can submit it to your insurance company to see if they will provide any reimbursement. Please note, however, that neither Medicare nor Medicaid offers any reimbursement coverage for MeRT treatment.
